WHAT IT’S ABOUT:

She longs to soar

Regina Bradford, the Countess of Langley, did not get her “happily ever after”. Her father, a wealthy business man, married her off to an impoverished earl to gain an aristocratic title for the family. Regina is miserable in her marriage to Charles, the Earl of Langley, who is cheating on her on with the blonde beauty, Princess Adele Kazanov. Regina is an aspiring author, and despite her husband’s cruelty to her and his disdain for her writing, she is determined to finish her manuscript. She has resolved to living the rest of her life in a loveless marriage and spends most of her time with her beloved infant son, Austen, her best friend Ginger, her loyal butler Pickles, and her protective Great Dane, Hamlet. But when Regina meets the darkly handsome Prince Viktor Kazanov at a garden party, she yearns for more than a writing career: she yearns for true love as well.

He longs for freedom

Prince Viktor Kazanov wants a divorce. He is fed up with his wife Adele’s adultery with the Earl of Langley, and her lack of love for their daughter, Sally. At the Duke of Inverary’s annual retreat at his country estate, Viktor meets Regina and is immediately drawn to her wit, intelligence, and her fiery red-headed beauty. He decides then and there that he will begin divorce proceedings and free himself and his daughter from his cold-hearted wife. But when Adele and Charles are found murdered, suspicion turns to both Viktor and Regina, and the authorities seek to arrest them for the deaths of their spouses. It’s a race against time as Regina and Viktor try to clear their names and avoid the hangman’s noose. But when the killer strikes again, will they be destined for tragedy instead of happiness?

IS THERE ROOM FOR ANOTHER ROMANCE REVIEW BLOG? THE ANSWER MIGHT SURPRISE YOU by Ludvica Boota #amwriting #amreading #romancenovels

outlander-tv-tie-in-editionLisa-Kleypas-historical-romance-6697436-631-497It was all my friend’s fault. Well, not quite. It was her mother who introduced me to my two first loves: Jamie Fraser (Diana Gabaldon, Outlander) and Sebastian Lord St. Vincent (Lisa Kleypas, Devil in Winter).

It started with one book and then two and then before I knew it I was hooked. I wanted more. I would go to my friend’s house to hang out but my real motive was to talk to her mom so I could get more recommendations. Who was her favourite author? Who was her favourite romance hero of all time? Which historical time period did she love the most? I was brimming with questions. I had discovered historical romance novels and there was no turning back.

Back then (about ten years ago) it was word of mouth that enticed me to try new books and authors. Now, if I’m not sure what to read, all I have to do is Google “romance blog” and there are pages of sites listed. These romance review sites not only offer reviews on the latest romance books, they often feature interviews with authors, live chats, and unique giveaways. From Facebook pages to blog sites dedicated to the many facets of romance in every sub-genre imaginable, if you are a romance reader, chances are there is a blog out there for you.

The Social Influencer

romance-junkies-logoRomance book review blogs are important to bloggers, authors, readers, and publishers.  Like a clever eco-system, the interaction between these players produces a benefit for all. With a wide targeted audience reach, romance blogs are able to do what careful research marketing takes months to accomplish, talk directly to the reader.

With countless book blogs online, of varying quality and popularity, there is a lot to choose from, if you’re a reader who has a hankering for romance. Smart Bitches Trashy Books, Romance Junkies and Smexybooks are well known throughout the romance community and have a large readership, which can be as important to book promotion as traditional media, but some of the smaller niche-oriented blogs, like Jessy’s Book Club or Dirty Girl Romance can be very influential as well to a particularly voracious readership.

Screen Shot 2017-05-03 at 9.15.01 AMBut this connection is not one-sided. As Smexybooks contributor Mandi states, “I feel like review blogs are only for readers. I don’t expect my reviews to be read by authors or have any influence over authors. If I receive an ARC from an author or publicist, once I agree to review it, from that point on, my review is for my readers only. To be honest with our thoughts, we have to keep the author out of it. That is how we build up trust with our readers and how they can get to know the reviewers and their personal tastes.” As a bridge to the broader romance fiction community, romance blogs connect readers with not just their favourite books, but also to the romance authors themselves and to the larger romance community.

So is there room for another romance review blog?

In one word, YES! Romance blogs do more than just provide reviews; they are a social forum for both reviewers and readers to air opinions, on books, as well as trends and issues in the romance community. The issues might range from who your favourite romance hero is to the problem of book piracy. Romance bloggers blog because they have a passion for this genre and industry; readers follow because they share that same passion. But at the end of the day these romance blogs embrace the notion of a free-flow of ideas and of course, love for the genre. Romance readers are open minded, well-read and voracious. Because of this, there is always room for one more blog.

mr-darcys-guide-to-courtship-the-secrets-of-s-L-kw6ckWAlthough not all romance blogs are created equal, each brings its own unique brand to the market. As long as there is a continuous flow of new books, authors, and emerging sub-genres, there will always be readers craving their HEA with another Mr. Darcy and there will always be room for another book review blog.

Bottom line if you have the passion for the romance genre and love to talk and engage with others about all things romance, then yes, there is room for your voice, your blog.

Thinking about creating your own blog review site? Here are some tips from Smexybooks Romance Blogger Mandi:

Creating a new romance blog is like taking a slap shot through traffic and hoping you hit the back of the net. (Sincet we’re in the middle of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, this is my token hockey reference – #GoSensGo)  Not to worry, Smexybooks romance Blogger Mandi has some advice to help make your blog a super success.

Honesty is the best policy

When writing your review, Smexybooks blogger Mandi’s formula is pretty simple, there isn’t one. “I don’t think there is necessarily a set formula, but the one thing every reader wants to know when reading a review is: why. Why did I like this book? Why did I not like this book? Once they hear the why, they want to know more details. You can set up the plot all you want, but the readers really want to know the why. I also think it’s important to mention how steamy (or not steamy) the book is, and if there are any important triggers that could upset a reader.”

urlFind your Voice.

When it comes to creating a successful blog, “I think you have to have a genuine voice. In my opinion, my readers don’t want to read constant promo or constant five-star reviews. Again, they have to trust the reviewer to be giving them honest thoughts, rather than a five-star review just to make the author/publisher happy. I think that is important for a successful blog. Otherwise, just have fun. Be silly or be serious. Whatever tone that makes the reviewer happy will reflect well on the blog.”

Read and Engage

You need to create a buzz for your blog says Mandi, “Read. It sounds silly, but you have to read. And blog consistently. Get on twitter and chat about books as much as you can. Engage with others  – listen to other readers. And be yourself. Be proud of what you read and don’t be afraid to voice your honest opinions.”

Love in a Mist
Love in a Mist

So what’s my tip? Have fun.

As my favorite romance author Patricia Grasso told me in a recent interview “Writers do it for love first, and then they do it for money. Like ladies of the night.”  Well, so does the romance blogger and in most cases, minus the money. #wink

Beauty and the Earl

Book 2 ~ Lords of Stratford Series

A princess in danger . . .

Princess Amber Kazanov needs a husband. She flees her native Russia and takes refuge in England with her cousin Prince Rudolf Kazanov and his English wife. Prince Rudolf knows only one man who has the power and strength to protect his cousin. Arriving with Amber at the Earl of Stratford’s home, Rudolf makes the earl an outrageous proposition.

A broken man grieving for his dead wife . . .

Miles Montgomery, the Earl of Stratford, wants to be left alone. Since losing his beloved wife in a fire, Miles has sat in the dark and waited for his own death. Until the day a beautiful princess walks into his home seeking marriage and the protection of his name. Amber’s beauty attracts Miles, but her courageous heart shakes him to his core.

Drawn to Miles, Princess Amber sees beneath his masked scars and gruff exterior. Her love persuades him to push his bitterness aside and truly live and love again. Can Miles keep Amber safe when her enemies arrive in England? Or will his past return to haunt them?

EXCERPT:

Miles Montgomery, the fifteenth Earl of Stratford, turned his back on the nauseatingly cheerful sight outside his study window. He shifted his gaze to the portrait over the hearth. Sweet Brenna, gone in the flash of a midnight fire.

Out of habit, Miles reached to close the drapes and shroud his study in comforting darkness. He stopped himself, though, remembering his guests. John Saint-Germain, the Duke of Avon who was also his brother-in-law, and Prince Rudolf Kazanov had several business ventures in the offing and wanted to include him.

Business ventures. Miles twisted his chiseled lips into the ghost of a smile. Since the fire, business ventures had filled his empty existence.

Miles touched the mask that covered the left side of his face. His love, his face, his life had died on the fateful night of the fire. Now he needed to wait for his heart to stop beating.

“My lord, His Grace and His Highness have arrived,” the majordomo announced.

Miles touched his mask again. “Send them in, Pebbles.”

“Come on inside,” Pebbles called, his hands cupping his mouth.

Both the prince and the duke grinned at the majordomo as he passed them on the way out. Pebbles inclined his head as if he were the aristocrat and they the servants.

Miles met the two men in the middle of the room. With a smile of greeting, he shook the prince’s hand first and then the duke’s. Both men were as tall as he, a couple of inches over six feet.

Located on the second floor in the west wing of the manor, the earl’s study sat at one end of the Long Library. Floor-to-ceiling windows bathed the room in afternoon sunlight when the draperies were open, as they were now. Thousands of volumes filled the bookcases, and a thick red Persian carpet covered the floor. Over the main fireplace mantel hung an enormous portrait of a woman.

“Brenna, my wife,” Miles said, seeing where the prince’s gaze had drifted.

“She was a beautiful woman.”

“Shall we get down to business?” Miles gestured across the chamber. He sat behind his desk while the other two men took the chairs opposite him.

“Caroline misses you,” John said.

“I will visit her soon.”

“I’m surprised to see the drapes open,” his brother-in-law continued. “Normally, you sit in the dark. I was beginning to wonder if you were a vampire.”

“I opened the drapes for you,” Miles told him. “Normally, you comment on my sitting in the dark.”

Prince Rudolf chuckled, drawing their attention. “You bicker like my brothers and me.”

“We are not bickering, Your Highness,” Miles said. “His Grace prefers to mind my business instead of his own.” Though he spoke with a hint of a smile, his tone held a hard edge.

“You need a wife,” the duke said, undeterred by his brother-in-law’s sarcasm. “If you die without an heir, Terrence the Weasel will inherit.”

Miles wished he could be in his family’s company without listening to their comments regarding his life. Why should he care if his cousin inherited his title?

“I finished with the wife business when Brenna died,” Miles said, his weariness with the topic apparent. He glanced at the prince. “Do you see the nagging inflicted upon me?”

“The nagging will cease if you remarry,” Prince Rudolf said.

“No woman can ever replace Brenna.” Miles touched the masked side of his face. “Besides, what woman would consider marrying a scarred beast?”

“Georgiana Devon looks especially well,” John remarked. “She asked about you the last time I saw her in London.”

Miles shrugged his shoulders with indifference. “I left Georgiana behind a long time ago.”

“As I recall the gossip, you dropped Georgiana in favor of Sarah Pole,” John said. “You did know Sarah’s husband died and left her a wealthy widow? Weren’t you considering offering for her?”

Miles gave his brother-in-law a pointed look. “You know very well that I was considering Sarah when I met Brenna.”

“Vanessa Stanton lost her husband,” John said. “She always favored you, and you enjoyed her company.”

“Vanessa enjoyed everyone’s company. She sought her pleasures when I had a whole face,” Miles said. “I prefer living alone to wearing horns.”

“What would you do if a virtuous woman did want to marry you?” Prince Rudolf asked.

“I would marry and plant a dozen sons inside her,” Miles answered, hoping to drop the topic.

“Consecutively, I hope,” John quipped, making the other two smile. “Come to London and look over the latest crop of hopefuls.”

“I retired from society four years ago,” Miles refused. “If you have seen one debutante, you have seen them all.”

“Damn it, Miles,” John snapped. “Brenna is dead but you still live. Do you think she would want you to hide in the shadows?”

Miles said nothing, and an uncomfortable silence descended on the three men. Why, in God’s name, did John and Isabelle need to solve his problems? Why couldn’t they leave him alone in his misery?

“I couldn’t reach her in time and lost half my face for nothing,” Miles told the prince.

“I am sorry for your loss,” Rudolf said. “I cannot imagine the horror of losing the woman you love.”

Miles inclined his head, accepting the prince’s condolences.

“John is correct, though,” the prince added. “You need to return to the living.”

“Are you going to nag me, too?”

Prince Rudolf held his hands up in a gesture indicating he would say no more.

“I told you how pigheaded he is,” John said. Before Miles could reply, he added, “Shall we get down to business?”

Miles lifted his gaze to his wife’s portrait. He knew they were correct about living while he could, but his wife was gone. And the woman who equaled her had not been born . . .

Vikings and Pirates and Earls, Oh my! by Joanna D’Angelo #historicalromance #amreading

Image: Vikings TV series.
Image: Vikings TV series.

I was chatting with an author the other day (via email) and mentioned that “back in the day”  okay – in the 1980s! Gasp! I would regularly visit several used book stores in town to keep up my “romance novel addiction”. I easily bought about 20 books a month. I also bought new releases but they couldn’t keep up with my voracious appetite for historical romances.

tn-500_bdarnkBack then, it seemed that the publishing houses had a much more “loose” view of the Historical Romance genre – which was my go-to genre for reading. I read so many that I can’t remember the names of the authors and titles of the books (alas). But I do remember that many of them were set in “interesting” locales and eras and countries. One book, featured a blind heroine who was married off to a Viking warrior and the book was set in Sweden I think. Anyway, it was a lovely story. Another book was set in Poland and I can’t remember what era it was,  but the heroine dressed like a boy in order to join the army. It was also a good story and a fun read. After studying A Tale of Two Cities, in high school, I wanted to gobble up books about the French Revolution, but I wanted a HAPPY ENDING, of course!

Love in a Mist 453 x 680Lachesis Publishing has begun to revise and re-release some of Patricia Grasso’s gorgeous Elizabethan romances. I absolutely love the Elizabethan era! Especially when we get to hang out with Queen Elizabeth 1. The first one we released was Love in a Mist about a Welsh princess (who is also a Druid – which leads to all sorts of trouble!) who travels to England to meet her birth father and ends up marrying an Earl. We’ll be following up with My Heart’s Desire which follows the daughter of the hero and heroine of Love in a Mist. Both books feature Patricia’s trademark humour and wonderful heroines.
pride-and-prejudice-pride-and-prejudice-35362539-1823-1200

I know that Regency historicals are hugely popular today and we love to publish them (Check out our Regencies by Patricia Grasso, JoMarie DeGioia and Beverly Adam). But I would also love to see more variety out there again. Historical romances set in different countries and eras. There are so many stories out there, yet to be told – the possibilities are endless. What do you think? Are you a die-hard Regency fan or would you love to read more variety in historical romance?
