Fall In Love With Ashlyn Chase by Ludvica Boota #romanceconference

Ashlyn Chase

I first met Ashlyn Chase earlier this summer at the Romancing the Capital Conference 2017 (RTC) in Ottawa. She was one of the participating authors who sat on a few very interesting panels. This fun loving author, who enjoys connecting with her fans, currently has a paranormal romantic comedy series Love Spells Gone Wrong published by Lachesis Publishing. A fabulous series that offers a touch of romance and a dash of a comedy, a cozy read that goes perfectly with a steaming hot cup of cocoa on a cool fall evening!

With her own conference coming up, Fall in Love with New England and several books on the horizon, it was a miracle she had some extra time to connect with me and give us a glimpse into what she’s up to this fall.

LB: I always find it interesting to hear how authors come up with their idea for stories. With the Love Spells Gone Wrong Series there is a whole host of colorful characters, witchy events and a touch of mystery. How did you come up with the idea for this series?

AC: Oh, boy. I don’t know. I’ll just blame it on my muse, Thalia—the muse of comedy!

LB: At RTC 2017 you were on the “Adding a giggle to books” panel where you talked about adding comedy to your work and fans of the Love Spells Gone Wrong Series have often commented on how “sweet, sexy and funny” the books are. How important is the element of comedy in this series?

AC: Comedy is extremely important to me. Writing is hard work, and in my humble opinion, entertaining myself is essential to enjoying the process. What is it they say? If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life?

Readers can tell when your heart is in it and when it’s not. If I’m making myself chuckle, the readers will get a smile out of it too. I get fan mail saying, ‘I love your books. They’re a great escape…or, they helped me through a hard time.’ That’s when I know I’ve paid it forward, what an honor and privilege!

LB: Are there any other books planned for the Love Spells Gone Wrong Series?

AC: If I can ever find the time! I’m under contract for 2 more novels—and I promised a Kindle Worlds story to a fellow paranormal romantic comedy author. And then there are two more series ideas burning a hole in my brain. Maybe I can find a way to link them all together. LOL

LB: What other books are you working on right now?

AC: The Phoenix Brothers series. Seven brothers. All phoenix shapeshifters. And all but one are firefighters. If the worst happens, they can rise from the ashes. Yup, the legend is real, folks!

LB: “Fall in Love with New England” (I love this name! it’s so perfect) is a romance reader conference that has been organized by romance writers. This year it is taking place on October 13-14, 2017 at Best Western Executive Court Inn & Conference Center in Manchester, New Hampshire US.  As one of the founding organizers, how did the idea for this conference come about?

AC: I kept wishing there was a romance reader/author conference close enough that I could drive to it. Upon meeting an organizer who puts on conferences all over the country, I asked if she’d consider one in New England. She said (haultily) ‘We’ll never go to New England. Boston is too expensive and it has to be near an airport.’ Okaaay…

Meet the real Ashlyn Chase. Never say never—I’ll take it as a dare. LOL. We have more than one airport in New England, and I found a lovely conference center and banquet hall about a mile from the Boston/Manchester Regional Airport. They even have a free shuttle! The hotel rates really drop after Columbus Day weekend, and that’s peak foliage season in NH. To me, it was a no brainer. Booked it. Paid the deposit. Got to work! 2016 was our first year and everyone had tons of much fun! By Sunday morning my conference committee and I decided we wanted to do it again. There’s still time for readers to register! www.fallinlovewithnewengland.com

Oh, and did I mention NH has no sales tax? Come and do your Christmas shopping! The Mall of NH and a new outlet mall are nearby.

LB: What are some of the fun, exciting events, and activities that are planned for readers?

AC: Here’s an updated list of attending authors. http://fallinlovewithnewengland.blogspot.com Some of the fun for readers (besides what’s listed on our website) can be found on our Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/groups/973500356041070/ This year we’ll be doing charm bracelets! I provide the empty bracelet and authors will give readers a charm representing their book—just for the asking!

LB: For authors who are looking at ways to market and promote themselves, do you believe participating in genre/industry conferences are a good promotional tool to invest in?

AC: Yes! The face-to-face interaction with readers is priceless! As a reader myself, I’ll buy a book from someone I’ve met and considered a friend a lot faster and more frequently than I will from an author I’ve just heard of. Here we make friends. Because this conference is still small, it’s easy!

LB: On a personal note, as an author, do you enjoy attending conferences?

AC: I love reader/author conferences, although I have to say I’ve been a little bummed out by the huge ones lately. Everyone wants to meet the famous authors. Mid-listers like me get lost. I enjoy the book signings at the smaller conferences, and believe it or not, I sell a lot more books even though there are fewer readers. Why? Because we’ve had time to become friends!

LB: You are one busy author! With all your commitments, do you still find time to read for pleasure? And if you do, what do you love to read?

AC: If I have time and my brain hasn’t completely turned to mush at the end of the day, I love to read. I may only have time for a chapter, but a good book is a treat I can dole out slowly.

I just finished Mary Janice Davidson’s first book in her new Insighter series. Deja Who. Very funny and unique. I will be starting Robyn Peterman’s second book in her Magic and Mayhem series tonight. And guess what? She invited me to write a book in her Kindle World! So, of course, that means I’ll be reading her whole series back-to-back for the next few weeks. Lots to look forward to!

LB: I like that you mentioned earlier that old saying, If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life”. If you were not a romance writer, what do you think you would be doing?

AC: I’d probably sell real estate or stage houses. I was trained in Interior Design and my guilty pleasure is HGTV… Oh, by the way, romance novels are not my guilty pleasure. I don’t feel guilty at all for enjoying my life!

LB: Thank you again, Ashlyn for your time. I know how precious it is!

AC: Thanks for the interview! It was fun and I appreciate the chance to reach more readers.

LB: Anyone looking to catch up with Ashlyn at her Fall in Love with New England conference, the details are below. For those who can’t attend the full conference, there will be a book signing as well!

Ashlyn Chase Bio

Ashlyn Chase describes herself as an Almond Joy bar. A little nutty, a little flaky, but basically sweet, wanting only to give her readers a satisfying experience. She holds a degree in behavioral sciences, worked as a psychiatric RN for several years, and spent a few more years working for the American Red Cross. She credits her sense of humor to her former careers since comedy helped preserve whatever was left of her sanity. She is a multi-published, award-winning author of humorous erotic and paranormal romances, represented by the Seymour Agency.

She lives in beautiful New Hampshire with her true-life hero husband who looks like Hugh Jackman with a salt and pepper dye job. They are owned by a spoiled brat cat.

TUG OF ATTRACTION – WHAT I’TS ABOUT:

Book 2 Love Spells Gone Wrong Series

Failed actress Brigit Love moved back to New Hampshire from Hollywood with one goal: to have a child. So far her only babies are furry and live at the animal shelter where she works. Brigit isn’t willing to marry to get what she wants, so doing things in “the correct order” may not be possible. Even her Wiccan spells don’t seem to be working. Until she comes up with an outrageous idea that just might do the trick.

Handsome tugboat captain Ethan Cox loves his life as a happy bachelor and his only goal is to keep things exactly the way they are. No wonder his coven friend Brigit thinks he’d be the perfect guy to plant the seed and walk away whistling, especially with an iron clad contract protecting his interests.

Ethan truly wants to help Brigit, but the contract she draws up stating he must give up all rights and responsibilities leaves him with a sinking feeling. Will he lose Brigit’s friendship and make coven rituals awkward if he refuses—or lose even more if he doesn’t?

My sexy, fun, author friend: Q and A with Dalton Diaz by Ashlyn Chase #amwriting #amreading

4gUptUmp_400x400Never under-estimate the positive power of romance authors. Or the laughs, when they get together. Romance author Ashlyn Chase interviews her friend and fellow romance author and writing partner Dalton Diaz:

perf5.000x8.000.inddAC: So, Dalton, what are you working on these days? I know we have a mutual project, but that’s nonfiction. I’ll bet you also have another bunch of characters in your head that are chattering away at you too.

DD: I have a new series called Hotel Rendezvous, that takes place at the Menger Hotel in San Antonio, TX. It’s about a couple who go there to celebrate their anniversary. Um, in bed. <g> The first book, Makin’ It Right, was released on March 2, 2016.

AC: You were already a member of Romance Writers of America when I got there in 2002. When did you join and why?

necrwa logo.2DD: I joined the New England chapter in 2000, after taking a local adult-ed class taught by Suzanne Brockmann. Until then, I had no idea RWA existed!

AC: Many writers have a hard time balancing family and career, and I’ve admired the way you handle it with a sense of humor. What does your family think about what you do?

DD: They tease me mercilessly. To be fair, they tease me mercilessly about everything. I have no idea where they get it from.

AC: If you couldn’t write, what would you do? I know, that’s a terrible question. I hate it too. I’m just dying to see how you handle it. (Insert evil grin here.)

Subscribe to Dalton's newsletter for upcoming releases and re-releases.
Subscribe to Dalton’s newsletter for upcoming releases and re-releases.

DD: Read everything I could get my hands on and wish I could write! I seriously don’t know how to answer this question. I’ve been writing since middle school, and I can’t imagine not being able to do it anymore.

AC: What is your number one distraction?

DD: Real life. I can’t get out of my own way.

AC: I know you like to cook. Tell us how you write as if you’re dictating a recipe.

DD: LOL! I never thought of it this way, but they have a very similar process. An idea of what to cook comes to mind. I let it set for a bit, then research the main ingredients I want to combine until that gels. Then, I go for it!

All in the name of research! Dalton Diaz surrounded by a group of hunks at the Wild Wicked Weekend author and reader conference.
All in the name of research! Dalton Diaz surrounded by a group of hunks at the Wild Wicked Weekend author and reader conference.

AC: I know the romance genre is important to you. Can you tell us why?

DD: It’s all I like to read. I’m in love with love.

AC: If you could correct one misconception about the romance genre, which one would it be?

DD: That if you write erotic romance, you can’t possibly be happily married and monogamous. It’s ridiculous. No one assumes someone who writes thrillers goes around stabbing people.

perf5.000x8.000.inddAC: Which is your favorite subgenre to write?

DD: M/F, M/M, Menage. It depends on my mood. For now, it all has to be contemporary, and it all has to contain humor.

AC: When readers ask you how long it takes to write a novel, what do you tell them? Truthfully.

DD: It takes me way longer than it should. Can’t get out of my own way, remember? How’s that for truth?

e1f3d1_73d09b0ae60a4d4f9dd5d631ceb112aaAC: Well this is been ten easy questions with my writing partner, Dalton Diaz. She’s probably going to kill me now. But before she does, I just want the world to know that she’s the reason those books we’ve written together have even seen the light of day. Each time I’ve asked for her contributions, it’s really been a cry for help. I’ve been stuck, or overwhelmed, or sometimes I just felt like I wasn’t up to the task. Not everyone is so lucky to have a person they can turn to, whose writing they love, and whose opinion they respect. I’m looking forward to writing together when I’m not desperate for help, and we can just have fun brainstorming, plotting, and perfecting a new book.

DD: Hah! Back atcha times 10!

WHAT IT’S ABOUT:

Pretty Wiccan Rebecca Colby borrowed money from her father to start a bakery, and now he’s calling the loan due. When she learns he fell off the gambling wagon and owes big money to some scary people, she has to start making a profit—and fast—before the loan shark takes a bite out of her.

Hot Cowboy Dru Tanner is looking for his missing sister who left Texas to explore their New England Wiccan roots. She’s the only family he has left, and he’s desperate to find her. Dru has to hide the fact that he’s not a Wiccan long enough to infiltrate a coven in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. It’s the only lead he has.

Dru needs a job and a place to stay while he searches for his sister. Rebecca needs cheap help so she can work some baking magic. Dru makes Rebecca an offer she can’t refuse—if only lust doesn’t drive them crazy first.

READ AN EXCERPT:

The bell above the door tinkled, signaling a customer. Jumping to her feet, Rebecca mumbled into the phone, “I’ll have to call you back, Dad.” She hung up and took a deep breath to compose herself.

Plastering a smile on her face, she turned toward the counter and caught her first glimpse of the most incredible man she’d ever seen. He was tall, at least six feet. His jeans hugged lean hips in such a way as to leave little to the imagination, yet he moved in them casually, looking totally comfortable.

When he reached the counter a gorgeous smile softened his rugged features. Blue eyes and sandy brown hair peaked out from under the well-worn cowboy hat. Am I looking at a real live cowboy here in New England?

He tipped the brim of his hat. “Mornin’ ma’am. Or I should say good afternoon. I guess it’s past noontime, after all.”

If he was rambling a little bit, she was grateful for it. She didn’t think she could speak right away.

“I was wonderin’ . . . that help-wanted sign in the window . . . ?”

Shoot. Should she tell the guy she might not be in business very long? Her Wiccan values had her believing that honesty was the best policy, but she could at least let him finish his sentence.

“Yes?” she prompted.

“Well, this is gonna sound pretty stupid if I’m wrong . . .”

His hesitation only lasted a moment. Then he gazed into her eyes with his piercing blue ones. “Are you by any chance a witch? Because if so, maybe we can help each other. I’m willin’ to trade my services for your help findin’ my sister.”

That sure wasn’t what she expected him to say. She almost tipped her head toward the ceiling to thank the Goddess.

“I—uh . . .Yes. I’m Wiccan. Do you want a locator spell?”

“Sure. If that’ll help me find her.” He reached into his shirt pocket and produced a picture of a young woman. She resembled him, but she looked much younger. Long blonde hair tumbled down from a similar cowboy hat, and she wore a checkered shirt, but the major similarities were her blue eyes and easy smile.

Rebecca hadn’t done a locator spell in a long time. And she’d never done one to find a human being, but the trade was a perfect idea. Witches aren’t supposed to make money by performing spells for other people, but a trade to save some money doesn’t count. Does it? She’d ask Hanna, later. For now, she was intrigued by the idea and the cowboy was waiting for an answer.

“Can you bake?”

He laughed. “I can learn.”

“No need. There are plenty of other ways you can help. I’ll have you fill out an application, and later I’ll check your references. By the way, our coven is meeting tonight. Would you be interested in attending?”

His brows shot up. After a brief hesitation he asked, “Do you think that’ll help me find my sister?”

“It might. You could also check out Myranda’s Occult Shop. She’s got loads of expertise and you can find any ingredients you need for a spell there.”

“A spell . . . Uh, sure, I’ll talk to Myranda.”

“Good! I hope to see you tonight,” she said. “I’ll get you that application now, and if your references are good you can start tomorrow.”

“Great. Can I get that application with a side of cherry pie?”

“Sure thing.” She smiled, already feeling a bit lighter.

What is a Witch? by Ashlyn Chase (light paranormal romance author)

pagan ritual rebloggy.com

Witch meant “wise woman” to our Pagan ancestors, as it does to me. I cannot think of any more appropriate term.

Laurie Cabot (the official witch of Salem, MA) warned, “Do not teach this craft to fools.” I don’t think I hear that quite enough. There is great power, thus great responsibility, at our wand-tips. Those who are governed by knee-jerk reactions or vindictiveness have no business wielding magic as a weapon. For those who fear modern day Wicca, know that the number one fundamental lesson we are taught is “Harm none.” The next item on the Witchcraft 101 lesson plan is the rule of three. If you send out any black magic, it will backfire on the sender three times.

A craft is something creative. It’s also something we practice. Authors create and practice their craft each time they write a story. Wiccans may draw a magic circle and put an intention out to the universe as part of practicing their craft. Because I wish to be a wise-woman, I never told a certain ex-friend that I was involved with the craft. She had a hair trigger temper and revenge was something she thought was good to get. Right after Hollywood released, “The Craft” she asked me if I knew where she could learn witchcraft. I told her she should probably realize that Hollywood wasn’t real. I went on to mention that Witches today were more like a bunch of earthy, peace-loving hippies. She quickly lost interest.

Cupcake Coven Cover-edit (2)My latest series, Love Spells Gone Wrong  is about a coven of good witches that goof! Hey, we all make mistakes, right? How did I get the idea for this series? Well, it happened to someone who asked for my help. (By the way, other than sending healing white light, witches can’t perform magic for another person without their specific request.)

So, my male friend asked for a date for New Year’s Eve. I felt he was a tough case, because he wasn’t exactly good looking (putting it mildly.) I supercharged my spell, using red (passion) instead of pink (romantic love.) My mistake! On January first he called me and demanded, “What TugCover-453x680did you do?”

Uh oh. “Why? What happened,” I asked, innocently.

He shouted, “I was practically date-raped last night.”

Yikes! As it turned out, he bumped into an old girlfriend who was obsessed with him. Coincidence? People who don’t believe in magic would say ‘yes.’ People who do believe in magic would tsk-tsk and tell him to find another witch.

Now, I have to confess, I’m a lazy Wiccan. I haven’t practiced in years and no one has asked for my help recently. (Thank goodness.) I don’t do spells for myself anymore, because my life is almost perfect, and I don’t want to mess it up!

But nothing is wasted on a writer! I’m able to use what I know to craft a believable story. And maybe that’s all I should do!

When Irish Eyes Are Smilin’ by Ashlyn Chase (paranormal romance author)

Guess who's been turned into a Leprechaun?
Guess who’s been turned into a Leprechaun?

September is an exciting month!

Several months ago I joked on my facebook fan page that I should go to Ireland to do research for my upcoming Boston Dragon Novels. After all, the first book begins in Ireland and my characters (and thus my readers) make trips back and forth throughout.

So I mentioned it as a joke. Then I realized I’ve been to almost every place I’ve set a book. Just soaking up the atmosphere for a week or so and picking up details of special places helps make my novels richer as a result.

Now this is a library! (Trinity College Library)
Now this is a library! (Trinity College Library)

Yeah, so the joke was on me. My readers began their pressure campaigns. ‘You should go!’ and ‘Absolutely, you should check it out!’ I mentioned this to my dear daughter, whom I call Little Miss Amazing, and she said, “That’s next on my bucket list!”

Well, we haven’t had a long mother-daughter trip since she was 12 when I took her back to Colorado to show

What a view here in Dublin!
What a view here in Dublin!

her where she was born. We spent a week, saw more than I did in the two years I lived there, and had a ball. We’re close anyway–more like friends, now that she’s an adult–so it should be a lot of fun.  Someone (I can’t remember who) said ‘Never travel with someone you don’t love.’ Good advice. I’ve done that too. Ugh.

We’re both so excited we can hardly stand it! I already have loads of pictures to share with my facebook fans when I get back! In fact I already started posting them. If you want to see them, just ‘like’ my page and begin following the posts.

TugCover-453x680And if that’s not enough, I have a new release at the end of this month! Tug of Attraction will be coming out 9/28/15. It should be available for pre-orders soon. I’m donating 15% of my royalties to The Endometriosis Foundation of America. If you want to know more about this unspoken of disease, read the book! The heroine suffers from it, and that makes this an unusual romance. My editor said, “I love, love, love it!” I hope you will too!

Why I Re-released The Cupcake Coven by Ashlyn Chase (light paranormal romance author)

Cupcake Coven Cover-edit (2)

The Cupcake Coven (a new and improved version) has been RE-RELEASED!

YOU CAN PURCHASE THE CUPCAKE COVEN RIGHT HERE at Lachesis Publishing

OR GET IT ON amazon, kobo, ARe and BookStrand and very soon on B&N.

Because I took down my self-published version of THE CUPCAKE COVEN and gave it to Lachesis Publishing (only because I’m a terrible business person, and would rather write more books than keep track of sales, distribution, etc.) B&N is making sure Lachesis has the right to republish it. It’s in their review process, so it will be up very soon.

I’m actually glad these outlets make sure our books are legit. I’ve heard about some unscrupulous imposters stealing book rights and republishing them under their own names. This is, of course, illegal. Copyright infringement carries a penalty of $250,000 and 5 years in jail. Don’t even think about it! Readers WILL contact the book sellers or authors to report when book they already read and loved has popped up again–usually with a different cover.

My cover is the same as before. Because it’s so unique I hope readers will recognize it as a book they’ve already bought. Although, if they want to buy the new version too, I won’t be upset. (wink)
I love the new book. I paid for an editor before, but my new Lachesis Publishing editor did an even better job

That’s why I’ve decided I love traditional publishing instead of Indie publishing. I have a whole new appreciation for all the work a publisher does for me, and they take the financial risk! Yes, I give up some of the royalties, but as far as I’m concerned, they earn their share.
